La Follette School of Public Affairs and Department of Political Science Professor Mark Copelovitch was named director of UW–Madison’s Center for European Studies for the 2021–22 academic year.
Copelovitch joined the La Follette School and Department of Political Science in 2006. Along with David Singer of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, he published Banks on the Brink: Global Capital, Securities Markets, and the Political Roots of Financial Crises in 2020.
The Center for European Studies belongs to a select group of U.S. Department of Education Title VI National Resource Centers at UW–Madison that receive funds to educate university audiences, the K-14 education community, the broader public, and state agencies about Europe. It brings together scholars from across campus and offers symposia, conferences, and guest speakers on various topics concerning Europe, its history, politics, languages, and culture, and the European Union as an international actor.
Copelovitch studies and teaches international political economy. His research focuses on the politics of international finance, money, and trade and the role of international organizations, such as the International Monetary Fund and the European Union, in global governance. He also is leading development of the La Follette School’s third policy forum, funded by the Kohl Initiative.
